Indonesia Reaches Major Milestone in Emissions Reduction, Boosts Renewable Energy Initiatives

Indonesia has achieved a significant milestone in its fight against climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 34.4%, equivalent to 123.2 million tons, by 2023. This accomplishment was announced by Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), during the “Indonesia’s Climate Change Mitigation Efforts in the Energy Sector” conference at the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Summit 2024 in Bali.

Eniya emphasized the ongoing need for Indonesia to continue its efforts in reducing emissions. “We must further our commitment by expanding renewable energy development, improving energy efficiency, and optimizing low-carbon fuel usage. Additionally, reducing coal dependency, innovating with clean coal technologies, and ensuring effective mining reclamation are crucial steps we must take,” she stated.

Supporting these initiatives, the Indonesian government has implemented Government Regulation No. 33/2023 on Energy Conservation. This regulation mandates energy management across various sectors, including energy service providers, industry, transportation, and buildings. The regulation is expected to yield substantial energy savings and further reduce emissions, with anticipated savings including:

  • Energy Service Providers: IDR 9.4 trillion and 3.56 million TOE
  • Industry: IDR 20.8 trillion and 5.28 million TOE
  • Transportation Sector: IDR 4.2 trillion and 0.4 million TOE
  • Buildings and Structures: IDR 0.9 trillion and 66 million TOE

Eniya also highlighted the success of the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (SKEM) and the Energy Saving Label (LTHE). These standards have been applied to seven common household devices: air conditioners, refrigerators, rice cookers, fans, LED lights, refrigerated display cases, and televisions. The measures are expected to significantly reduce electricity consumption and save energy in the coming years.

In promoting energy efficiency, Eniya emphasized the importance of adopting SKEM-certified and five-star LTHE-labeled products in daily life. “Last year, we introduced SKEM and labeling for various appliances. This must be reflected in our lifestyle choices, and I urge everyone to choose electronic products with these marks,” she said. The SKEM for daily-use equipment, such as air conditioners and LED lights, is projected to reduce the electricity load by 599 MW and save 3.0 TWh of energy by 2025. By 2030, these measures are expected to further reduce the load by 787 MW and save 3.8 TWh.

Eniya concluded by underscoring the need for cooperation and stakeholder participation in achieving a just energy transition and effective climate change mitigation. “Strengthening and expanding innovation technologies for energy efficiency and renewable energy integration is among our top priorities. By optimizing our resources, we can make substantial progress toward a sustainable and inclusive energy future,” she affirmed.

Indonesia’s unwavering commitment to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable energy practices marks a critical step toward mitigating climate change and securing a greener future.
